The word safari means “journey” in Swahili, and the development of the Monarto Safari Resort in the Adelaide Hills has certainly been just that – a journey.

Billed as the largest safari experience outside of Africa, the resort features a 78-room premium hotel, 20 glamping tents, a day spa, conference facilities, and a range of dining options. In early 2025, operations of the resort were entrusted to tourism group Journey Beyond.

Located around 70km from Adelaide, Monarto Safari Park began in the 1980s as a closed-to-the-public breeding facility for endangered species. Today, it spans more than 1,500 hectares and is home to over 500 animals—including lions, rhinos, cheetahs, giraffes, and chimpanzees – roaming expansive, naturalistic habitats.

While the idea of building a resort within the park was first floated a decade ago, Australian businessman Gerry Ryan OAM admits it took time for the dream to become a reality.

At an exclusive opening ceremony held on July 1 and 2, Ryan recalled how Elaine Bensted, then Chief Executive of Zoos SA, and Peter Clark, Director of Monarto Safari Park, first pitched the concept by showing him a patch of land within the park.

“I’m a bit of a dreamer, and I thought they were dreamier than me,” Ryan laughed. “But after getting to know Elaine, Peter, and the team, I came on board and bought the land.:

“I set out to build a hotel, which became a lodge. That was nine years ago. I thank everyone for their patience—unfortunately, COVID and a few personal challenges slowed us down along the way.”

The opening ceremony was attended by government officials, tourism leaders, conservationists, press and key stakeholders who contributed to bringing this  project to fruition.

Journey Beyond CEO Chris Tallent echoed Ryan’s pride: “It’s here, it’s real, and it’s been a long time coming,” he said.

“It’s truly remarkable to stand here today, knowing the resort has been operational since 28 May. When you walk in, it feels as if it’s always been here—beautifully integrated into the landscape and running smoothly, in harmony with the environment and our partners.”

“There’s no doubt this will become one of the most iconic travel experiences in Australia.”

Travel agents can book experiences at Monarto Safari Resort through Journey Beyond’s dedicated Agent Portal.
