Independent travel advisors from across Australia gathered at 1 Hotel Melbourne on 16 July for 1000 Mile Travel Group’s “Connections” event, an afternoon focused on community, collaboration and the challenges currently facing travel businesses.
Sponsored by 1 Hotel Melbourne and Expedia TAAP, the event drew 16 travel advisors among 26 total attendees, including 1000MTG team members and supplier partners.
The event was targeted at advisors at every stage of their business journey, showcasing the benefits of belonging to a global host travel agency network, including access to industry expertise, supplier partnerships, technology and a connected peer community.
“Connections is about more than bringing our advisors together; it’s about creating a space where they can share ideas, discuss challenges and learn from one another. We’ve received feedback that advisors want more opportunities like this, which reinforces how valuable face-to-face connection and peer support are in helping independent businesses thrive,” said 1000MTG General Manager Australia, Lauren Gray.
A key focus was helping advisors navigate the impact of Reserve Bank of Australia changes on their businesses, with open discussion around the potential effect on profitability and strategies to protect margins. 1000MTG also outlined the proactive steps it’s taking with supplier partners, including Mint Payments, to explore solutions that could soften the impact of the changes.
“The travel industry continues to evolve, and our role is to ensure advisors have the support, resources and partnerships they need to adapt and grow. Having honest conversations about challenges, sharing ideas and working collaboratively with our suppliers allows us to find practical solutions that benefit our network,” Gray said.
The afternoon also featured leadership updates on the company’s FY26 achievements and FY27 strategy, along with operational updates, supplier education and interactive workshops.
1000MTG Independent Travel Advisor Kurt Hufer said events like Connections helped replicate the camaraderie of office life for advisors now working remotely.
“Working from home is mostly a positive experience, but you certainly miss that connection with your colleagues. Events like the 1000MTG Connections day are so important as it gives everyone a chance to meet, share experiences and learn from each other – the simple things we took for granted when working each day in shops and offices,” Hufer said.
A highlight of the day was a “speed dating” session, giving advisors the chance to connect one-on-one and swap insights across their different areas of expertise. The group also enjoyed an exclusive hotel inspection and dinner at From Here by Mike.
“The Connections event in Melbourne was really great for reconnecting with our peers, exchanging insights and information, receiving head office updates and taking a trip interstate. I think these in-person workshops are really valuable and hopefully we get to attend another one next year,” said 1000MTG Independent Travel Advisor Amy Crossland.
Gray thanked 1 Hotel Melbourne for hosting the event.
“We’re incredibly grateful to the team at 1 Hotel Melbourne for providing such an exceptional setting. From the venue and outstanding service to the unforgettable dining experience, it was the perfect backdrop for bringing our advisor community together,” she said.
