Five years ago, the homeworking sector was but a small speck in the overall travel industry. In 2012 though, it's become a dominant sector with widespread appeal. "This isn't a surprise at all," said MTA Travel's managing director Roy Merricks. "When we started over 12 years ago, the reaction of travel consultants was, 'this sounds too good to be true, what's the catch?'. Now we don't need to explain," he said.
Meanwhile, TravelManagers' executive general manager Mandy Scotney explained that the sector is no longer solely dominated by mums. And while the lure of a more streamlined business is an attraction, increased earning capacity was revealed as the least important factor. "It is about achieving a flexible lifestyle and being free of all the back office work, leaving them the freedom to just sell," Travel Counsellors' general manager Deb Duncan said.
