Sydney Marriott Hotel will be rebranded Pullman Sydney Hyde Park, as Accor today completed the acquisition of the Mirvac Group’s hotel interests in Australia and New Zealand.

The previously Mirvac-managed property will undergo a $7 million refurbishment including renovation of rooms and “significant upgrades” to the hotel’s lobby and public areas.

The rebadging demonstrates the firm’s commitment to expanding its five-star Pullman brand, according to chief operating officer Asia Pacific Michael Issenberg.

“With the addition of the Sydney Marriott, and with the planned rebranding of a number of existing Mirvac hotels to Pullman, it will become a real force in the Pacific over the next two years,” he said.

He anticipated more than 150 Pullman properties globally by 2015, with 60 of those in Asia Pacific.

Meanwhile, this first phase of integration will also see the Sebel Newcastle Beach become the Novotel Newcastle Beach in June.

A total of 43 hotels will be added to Accor’s portfolio as a result of the deal, with the majority to retain their existing brands which include Quay West Suites & Resorts, Sea Temple, Sebel Hotels, Resorts & Residences and Citigate Hotels.

It takes Accor’s property count in Australia and New Zealand to 240, representing 32,000 rooms. It makes the French firm the first group in the Asia Pacific region to exceed 500 hotels.
