Air New Zealand has signed a global two-movie partnership with the makers of the new Hobbit movies to make it the official airline of Middle Earth.

Under the two-year tie-up, passengers to and from the UK and North America will take to the skies onboard two film-branded Boeing 777 aircraft. The aircraft will feature a special edition in-flight security video, and the opportunity to participate in a range of promotions and experiences.

General manager marketing and communications Mike Tod anticipated a large number of international visitors making their way to Wellington for the premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on November 28.

“New Zealand is clearly established as the home of Middle Earth and Air New Zealand will bring the magic to life for travellers,” he said. “This partnership follows on naturally from the success of Air New Zealand’s relationship with the Lord of the Rings Trilogy in raising New Zealand’s profile as an international travel destination.”

He confirmed the airline would be putting “millions of dollars” into the marketing of the film and its sequel The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

Social media will be a major focus for the carrier in its quest to connect with fans of the movies, he anticipated.
