Australians heading to Thailand are being told to check their travel insurance following the military coup in the country.
Thailand's army chief seized power from the government on Thursday and ordered demonstrators off the streets.
It comes after seven months of rallies in Bangkok, and follows the imposition of martial law on Tuesday.
Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) CEO Rob Whelan says insurance claims arising from riots, wars, rebellions, civil disruptions and military insurrection are common exclusions in travel insurance policies.
He says policies will not be voided by the coup but exclusions apply.
"Though travel insurance will usually not cover you for claims arising from military insurrection, including any restrictions to your activities, travellers remain covered for normal travel-related claims," Whelan said in a statement on Friday.
He's advising people to review their policy disclosure statements and contact their insurers if they have questions.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) continues to advise travellers to "exercise a high degree of caution" and avoid all demonstrations, protest sites, political events and large-scale public gatherings.
Earlier on Friday, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop expressed grave concerns about the developments in Thailand.
"It is a volatile situation," Bishop told ABC radio. "We are monitoring it closely but people need to pay close attention to their personal security and their travel plans."
The unrest follows the dismissal earlier this month of prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, in a controversial court ruling that sent tensions soaring.
The military junta, led by army chief General Prayut Chan-O-Cha, has banned gatherings of more than five people, ordered the ousted cabinet to report to the army and suspended the constitution – except for the section related to the monarchy.
It's unknown how many Australians are currently in Thailand, with DFAT only aware of 5000 who have registered with its Smartraveller website.
