The domestic capacity war raged on in August with new government figures confirming the number of available seats shot up by 10% to 6.55 million.
Australian domestic airlines carried 5.03 million passengers in August, an increase of 5.6% year on year, although numbers continued to be affected by the gradual resumption of Tiger Airways’ services.
Melbourne-Sydney remained Australia’s busiest route with 704,853 passengers, up 9.5% on August 2011 while the greatest increase was seen on the Newman-Perth route, where passenger numbers rose 55.8% to 36,900.
Sydney remained the busiest airport with 2.13 million passenger movements followed by Melbourne and Brisbane with 1.89 million and 1.45 million respectively.
