Belmond Ltd. has announced it will launch its first train itinerary in Ireland for the summer season in 2016, set to be the first luxury overnight rail experience of its kind in Ireland.
The Belmond Grand Hibernian takes its name from the classical Latin name for the island of Ireland, and has plans for tours of the countryside, coastal scenery and cities of both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Belmond has acquired ten carriages from Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail, which the company will transform into a luxury sleeper train with accommodation for up to 40 guests in 20 en-suite cabins.
The interior design project is being undertaken by James Park Associates, who also worked on train projects such as the Belmond Northern Belle and Eastern & Oriental Express, and will draw inspiration from Dublin’s classic Georgian architecture and Ireland’s ancient country traditions.
Belmond Grand Hibernian will also create four interconnecting suites to accommodate families, along with two restaurants and an observation bar car for the adults.
Belmond will offer two, four and six-night rail experiences, exploring destinations such as Dublin, Belfast and Cork, with daily excursions of historic estates, the Titanic Belfast centre, and the world of Ireland’s legendary writers, musicians and artists.
“Ireland offers today’s luxury traveller a rich and diverse cultural experience, with unrivalled scenery and warm hospitality that fit perfectly with Belmond’s offering of enriching and authentic hotel, rail and river cruise experiences,” president and CEO John Scott said.
Chief executive of Iarnr√≥d √âireann Irish Rail David Franks said they were proud to welcome Belmond Grand Hibernian to Ireland’s rail network.
“Our railways provide a unique aspect on the countryside, towns and cities of Ireland,” he said.
“Rail is therefore a key element of our national tourism product, and the launch of Belmond Grand Hibernian represents a strong endorsement of Ireland as a destination by Belmond.”
