Why get married in Hawaii?

The weather is warm and sunny; it combines a wedding with a honeymoon; it permits guests to enjoy a holiday at the wedding; it’s easy to get a marriage license; and with more than 10,000 foreign weddings taking place here each year, Hawaii has honed the art of the destination wedding.

Can same sex couples get married in Hawaii?

Hawaii is the 15th state in the US to legalise gay marriage. This law took effect in December 2013 and the islands are now a popular option for same-sex couples. A staff member from the Sheraton Waikiki in Honolulu told the ABC that more than 30 same-sex couples were married at the hotel after midnight on the first day of legalisation.

What are the legal requirements?

Couples will need to apply for a license either in person at a marriage license office or online. It costs $US60 ($68) and is valid for 30 days. There are no blood test or residency requirements but you must be over 18.

Which is the most romantic island for a wedding?

The most frequently recommended island for romance is Kauai, however the rainfall is heavier than neighbouring Maui, which leaves some pundits torn over the best outdoor wedding location. For a beach wedding, Oahu has the most options to choose from in the island chain.

When is the best time for an open-air wedding?

Hawaii is renowned for its pleasant climate. Summer might be a touch too hot for a ceremony in exposed sunlight, so the best tip is to plan it for the late afternoon or in a location with shade. Autumn and spring are seasons that have an increased risk of rain, however locals say it tends to pass quickly.

What is the best time of day?

It’s down to personal preference, but a beach wedding at sunset will wow your guests. Consult with a local expert to find the beaches that capture the sunset at the time of year you choose. There is a handy sunset calculator at www.konaweb.com.

Is patience required?

There isn’t a marriage license waiting period, which means impulse weddings when on holiday here are a real possibility.

Can the wedding dress be bought in Hawaii?

There are plenty of boutique shops in the cities, whether the bride is after a white flouncy number or a casual beach outfit of white bikini and sarong.

Can any beach be used for the wedding?

Hawaiian beaches are public domains, so you will want to choose a secluded one if you are after some privacy. Some beaches will require a permit for you to hold your wedding, so be sure to consult with an expert before rolling up on the big day.

Can a hawaiian wedding be small or large?

For intimacy, couples can truly elope in Hawaii as there is no need to have a witness present. For those after a blockbuster gathering, Aqua Hotels enables couples to book hotel rooms for their guests with no commitment. This policy has no contract, no minimum and includes a 12% discount.

How can the wedding be tailored?

The diversity of landscapes in Hawaii means that couples can marry under a waterfall or on a cliff top if they please. There’s even the left field option of a nude ceremony. Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort and Spa has wedding packages that include a wedding planner to tailor the day as well as a complimentary suite for the couple.

Can couples get married a second time in hawaii?

Vow renewals are very popular in the island chain and won’t require a license application.

How can couples “Hawaiianise” the wedding?

Tropical flower leis are a traditional accessory for the bride and groom in Hawaii. One renowned minister, Reverend Howie, starts each wedding ceremony by blowing a large conch shell three times to signal the start of proceedings. He can also integrate ancient Hawaiian blessings into the program. There are plenty of other options too.
