Govt drops indexation of departure tax

The travel industry has won a major battle after the government last night dropped a plan to index the departure tax to the rate of inflation.

The proposal was scrapped following pressure from the Coalition and Greens after intense lobbying by industry groups.

The $8 increase to the Passenger Movement Charge will remain however.

The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) described the development as a “pretty momentous occasion” for the industry.
