AFL and NRL teams from Sydney and Melbourne enjoyed success on the sporting field at the weekend as hotels from both cities also celebrated a bumper weekend of business.
Accor's nine hotels in the west of Sydney, including the four in Olympic Park, were full on Sunday night after the Melbourne Storm beat the Bulldogs, while properties in the CBD had occupancies of between 94% and 100%.
In the Victorian capital, Sydney Swans' trip to the MCG for their AFL Grand Final against Hawthorn, added 12 percentage points to Accor’s hotel occupancies with hotels packed on Saturday and close to full on Friday and Sunday.
“We would like to see it compulsory for an interstate team to be in the Grand Final,” Accor Victorian regional manager Adrian Williams said. “It was such a positive effect on Melbourne tourism.”
Meanwhile, Mantra reported strong demand with not a spare room in sight at its six hotels in Melbourne's CBD on Friday and Saturday.
Revenue per available room (Revpar) climbed 12% compared to Grand Final day in 2011. Mantra's four Sydney CBD properties were also close to capacity with revpar up 6%.
