Hong Kong’s latest waterfront icon has been officially launched, welcoming a giant ferris wheel, dubbed the Hong Kong Observation Wheel, to its landscape.

Located by the Central pier on Hong Kong Island, the 60-metre icon features 42 luxury gondolas and offers panoramic views of Hong Kong’s famed Victoria Harbour.

The wheel is estimated to hold as many as 1 million passengers each year, with each gondola taking eight passengers for a spin at a time.

The gondolas also come equipped not only with high-tech safety standards, but lightning fast wifi communication systems as well.

Visitors will be able to ride the Hong Kong Observation Wheel between 11am and 11pm throughout the year for a journey of 15-20 minutes.

Surrounded by public transport facilities, including the Star ferry and Hong Kong MTR Station, the icon is readily accessible to all visitors.

It also has a safe and convenient taxi and private car drop-off zone and no barriers to cater for visitors with disabilities.

A pocket-friendly AUD$15 is all you’ll spend to get a go on the ferris wheel, with children under 12 only $11 each.

The giant attraction wasn't an easy feat to build either, and you can see just what went into the making of the ferris wheel in this neat timelapse video.
