HotelsCombined reveals Australians, Brits, Norwegians, Russians and Americans are likely to spend most per night on accommodation.

The online site's latest study revealed the destinations with the world’s most expensive accommodation as well as the countries where tourists were paying the most, or the least, for accommodation.

HotelsCombined, global public relations and content manager, Alycia Simons says travellers tend to visit locations like the Maldives for very special occasions and are happy to pay more to do so.

“Destinations like the Maldives, Seychelles and Aruba are once-in-a-lifetime holiday locations. There is an expectation of indulgence when visiting one of these destinations and travellers are willing to pay more to ensure their holiday is a bit more luxurious."

On the other side of the scale Simons explained that tourists visiting countries like Bolivia and Laos will be looking for an affordable way to experience relatively untouched cultures and locations.

An avid traveller quoted in the study, Cindy Tchung, was reported to have spent a week in Dhidhoofinolhu Island, Maldives and upon returning said she was happy to pay for the expensive holiday.

“We visited the Maldives as a second honeymoon. The trip was about two or three times more expensive than other destinations, but it a destination that I have wanted to experience,”  Tchung said.
