The proposed 616-room hotel to be built as part of the International Convention Centre Sydney has been granted planning approval, with construction expected to begin by the end of the year.
The property, developed by Lend Lease, will form a major part of the Darling Harbour Live project currently underway which includes the new $1 billion convention centre along with retail and dining options.
The new hotel will enable Sydney to “fully capitalise” on the new precinct, according to Tourism and Transport Forum chief executive Ken Morrison.
“The Darling Harbour Live project is set to transform the precinct, delivering reinvigorated public spaces and world-class events facilities that will boost the visitor economy,” he said.
“Once complete, ICC Sydney will be the largest fully-integrated convention and exhibition facilities in Australia and it needs a world-class hotel to match."
Upon the lodgement of the plans last September, Lend Lease head of development David Hutton described it as a "fantastic building" which would enhance the Darling Harbour precinct.
“The hotel will support the success of the venues by servicing domestic and international delegates and will contribute to the strong demand for quality hotel accommodation in Sydney which has experienced an acute undersupply of rooms for over a decade," he said.
The hotel is expected to generate 350 jobs during construction, and 250 on-going operational jobs.
