In the spotlight: Yarra Valley & The Dandenongs

There’s something about red wine that soothes the soul. The aroma tickles the senses and the taste dances with the tastebuds. Needless to say, when I discovered my name was on the list for the Yarra Valley AIME pre-tour, I quickly turned to my colleagues to gloat – just a little.

Heading off from Melbourne on a glorious Saturday morning, our first stop was The Country Place, about 40 minutes out of town. As staff prepared for an evening wedding party, we traipsed around the lush gardens before surveying the extensive conferencing facilities, including versatile spaces for events of all sizes.

It was then off to the nearby Puffing Billy Railway to check out one of the most preserved railways in the world. After taking a quick snapshot with the controller, it was all on board for a unique dining experience. Catering for small to large groups, delegates can indulge in top quality food and wine in saloon-style dining carriages, overlooking some of Victoria’s most breathtaking scenery.

With a full belly of food, we made our way to the Rayners Stone Fruit Farm for a corporate-style tasting tour with farmer Len, before pulling into Rochford Wines for a surprise performance by Neil Finn at the Day on the Green.

Day two began with a tour of the renowned Balgownie Estate Vineyard Resort and Spa, including an up-close look at the versatile meeting spaces. Catering for up to 340 cocktail party guests, there’s meeting rooms and entertaining areas to please the most discerning clients.

After taking in the lush surrounds, it was off to Segway Victoria for a change of pace. Manouvering the two-wheeled carts is easier than it looks, but it's an experience best followed by a glass of local plonk.

After a packed weekend testing the conferencing offering, it's safe to say that there’s more to the region than vino alone. But nonetheless, it’s always a great way to top off a fantastic weekend.
