Almost a third of Kiwi flyers think sitting next to a smelly passenger is more annoying than misbehaving kids or someone who reclines their seat, a survey has found.

The survey of 2021 New Zealand travellers revealed 30 per cent think smelling bad is the most annoying thing a person can do on a flight.

This is followed by letting children misbehave at 22 per cent, while 17 per cent found talking loudly or incessantly infuriating.

Twelve per cent found travellers who recline their seat annoying.

When it came to what they would do about it, 28 per cent admitted they would do nothing and silently fume, while 18 per cent said they would complain to airline staff.

Another 17 per cent said they would confront the passenger.

When it comes to holidays, 36 per cent of respondents cited dirty accommodation as the source of disappointment or frustration.

Another 25 per cent pointed to delays, while three per cent said children really got their goats while holidaying.

When asked what irked them about other tourists, 69 per cent said loud behaviour and 54 per cent thought someone who constantly complains.

Twenty per cent found drunk behaviour annoying, while 16 per cent did not like overly friendly tourists.

The survey was commissioned by Southern Cross Travel Insurance.
