Nairobi Airport back on track

Despite concerns Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta Airport would be out of service for several weeks in the midst of tourism high season in the wake of last week's blaze, the airport has swiftly returned to service with its rehabilitation a national priority..

Perth and Nairobi-based operator Wildlife Safaris commended the government for its speedy reaction which has seen all international airlines moved to the domestic terminal for both arrivals and departures, with domestic flights now being operated from the cargo terminal and a free shuttle service in operation.

The airport had reopened within 48 hours of the fire and was almost 100% operational by the weekend, managing director Trevor Fernandes reported.

"As expected, the arrival and departure process is taking longer than usual, but no longer than London or Los Angeles or Sydney on a busy day," he said.

He added that the company's airside "meet and greet" service had enabled it to work around many of the inconveniences posed to passengers travelling through the airport.

"While flying from Perth to Sydney yesterday, I wondered how long it would take to restore services if a smiliar disaster happened at either Perth or Sydney airport. Certainly more than the few days Nairobi took to restore full services," Fernandes commented.
