Investment in hospitality training is essential to create substantial long-term employment for Australia’s youth, according to Accor.

A recently released Federal Department of Employment report predicted the accommodation and hospitality sector will grow at an average rate of 7.1% per annum over the five years to 2018, adding 55,200 new jobs over the five years.

“The hospitality sector needs a regular flow of qualified employees who are able to work in cities, and regional and remote areas, and there is considerable scope to advance the training sector to meet these requirements,” chief operating officer Accor Pacific, Simon McGrath, said.

He identified Indigenous employment as an area of particular need, with tourism and hospitality as a “natural industry” for growing Indigenous employment.

CLIA Australasia has expanded its executive partner ranks with the addition of two new members – Wild Earth Travel and the South Pacific Cruise Alliance.

A new-build Novotel hotel in New Plymouth will join Accor's New Zealand portfolio in 2015.

Currently under construction, the 100-room Novotel New Plymouth is scheduled to open early next year.

James Hogan, President and chief executive of Etihad Airways, has been inducted into The British Travel and Hospitality Industry Hall of Fame.

The accolade is in honour of his “significant part in creating and developing the travel and tourism industry in Britain and globally”.

Travelport has renewed a full content deal with Virgin Atlantic.
