The Tour de France may have inspired the cyclist in to go for a ride. But before you jump on just another cycle around the neighbourhood, it’s worth exploring some other cycling adventures you could be taking.

Responsibletravel.com has rounded up the six cycling holidays at the top of its list, offering bike-themed getaways all over the world to enjoy this summer.

Cycling safari

Jump on two wheels and discover the back roads of East Africa, riding through the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro and along the beaches of the Indian Ocean. A 16-day journey starts from $6604 per person, excluding flights and local bike hire.

Desert adventures

Pedal your way through the deserts of Jordan and camp out under the stars in Wadi Rum, before heading to the waters of the Dead Sea. Nine-days of desert adventure cost around $2500 per person, including flights.

Head in the clouds

Spend 16-days cycling across the Tibetan Plateau, taking in the Potala Palace, Everest Base Camp and Himalayan passes. This tour comes in just under $5000 per person, excluding flights and visas.

DIY Tour de France

For the fit, well-prepared cyclists that are keen followers of the Tour de France, try a five-day ‘Etape du Tour’ for your own version of the main event. Grab a last minute discount when you book, and experience the tour for around $2000 per person.

Coast to coast

Take two weeks to pedal your way from one Indian coast to another, starting at Kerala and the Western Ghats, and ending up in the Bay of Bengal. You’ll also experience the natural landscape of the country, all of which costs around $2200 per person.

Foodie finds

Balance your active holiday with some foodie delights, and explore vineyards, restaurants, fishing ports and markets. Spend eight-days cycling and sampling your way around Costa Brava from $1300 per person.

Whether you’re an avid cyclist or just enjoy exploring the world from two-wheels, a cycling tour is a great way to discover destinations in a new and interesting way.
