The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is reviving the "excitement and romance" of air travel, according to Sydney airport boss Kerrie Mather as she welcomed news Japan Airlines will bring the aircraft to Sydney from December 1.
The Japanese carrier will operate its Sydney-Tokyo route using the Dreamliner, now in the process of being reinstated to service by a number of airlines.
The airport's chief executive, Kerrie Mather, described the 787 as a "revolutionary" aircraft that will alter aviation worldwide.
"Its lower fuel consumption, running costs and noise profile changes the whole economics of air travel," she said.
Mather likened the new aircraft to the Airbus A380 which she believes has had a similar effect reinstating air travel's romantic image.
"The great news for travellers is that the economics of aircraft like the Boeing 787 will enhance Sydney's connectivity by opening up new non-stop routes, particularly in our target markets in South East Asia, India and China," she said.
A number of the airport's major carriers have the aircraft on order. It is expecting a "significant number" of Dreamliners to operate from Sydney over the next 12-18 months.
Meanwhile, Qatar Airways has resumed its Boeing 787 commercial services on its Doha-Dubai route with other routes to follow over the next month.
Air India has delayed its Dreamliner service resumption until May 22 for domestic services and from June 1 for European operations.
