The number of Aussie travellers tempted by a holiday in Tasmania is on the rise, with one in five considering a visit to the state in the next 12 months.

Tasmania's quarterly Tourism Info Monitor (TIM) showed the result for the July to September 2012 quarter represented a 3% increase on the same period the previous year.

In addition, around 63% of the 500 Australian travellers surveyed found the idea of a Tassie holiday "appealing", with the destination coming second only to Queensland.

State tourism minister Scott Bacon said the results would be a useful resource for local tourism operators and would help form the basis of Tourism Tasmania's marketing campaigns.

"The latest survey confirms our appeal as a tourist destination is strong," he said.

Word of mouth also emerged as a key influencer for those considering a Tassie trip.

"Almost 30% of those considering coming to Tasmania for a holiday relied on the recommendations of their friends and family members to help make their holiday destination choice," Bacon said.
