Virgin Australia passengers will now be able to stream inflight entertainment content to their own smartphones, tablets and laptops using its new wireless inflight entertainment system.

The platform, branded the "first of its kind in the Asia Pacific region", is being extended to the airline's domestic and short-haul network, following its successful trial earlier this year. So far 37 aircraft have been fitted with the new technology.

Chief customer officer Mark Hassell said "redefining travel" was sometimes a requirement of Virgin's commitment to customer experience.

"We know that inflight entertainment is a key driver in customer satisfaction," he said. "Our research shows that around 90% of our customers travel with at least one smartphone, laptop or tablet."

The wireless technology involved enables the airline to "constantly enhance the content and the functionality", meaning it can better cater to regular travellers, he continued.

The roll-out across Virgin's Boeing 737-800 and Embraer E1890 fleet will be completed by the end of the year.

"With the origins of the Virgin brand in entertainment, there is no limit to the expertise and unique content we can leverage around the world to continually offer our customers the bext entertainment in the sky."
