Virgin Australia has lodged an application for Airberlin to codeshare on its services between Abu Dhabi and Sydney.
In a submission to the International Air Services Commission (IASC), Virgin said a confidential agreement is being drawn up for the codeshare agreement.
Virgin operates three weekly services between Sydney and Abu Dhabi.
Virgin’s alliance partner Etihad holds a 29% stake in Airberlin.
Meanwhile, Virgin also requested to retain its allocation on the Indonesia route, due to expire within the next 12 months, for a further five years from February 25, 2014.
