With Resplendent Ceylon’s Wild Coast Tented Lodge recently honoured with two keys in the 2025 Michelin Key distinctions, we take a closer look at a property the embodies the company’s philosophy – “Luxury with purpose”.
Arriving at Wild Coast Tented Lodge, the first thing you notice is the design and architecture. From the moment you walk into the reception area, it’s clear that design is a major feature of this lodge. It feels immediately different to Ceylon Tea Trails – the first stop in the Resplendent Ceylon journey – yet just as distinctive in its own way.
There’s no disappointment as you move through the lodge and into your tent. The design attempts something bold: a sense of wild adventure delivered through luxury. Your first thought is Out of Africa. There’s a strong retro influence throughout, with an old-world, almost 1940s feel to the furniture, fittings and finishes.
Dark wooden floors anchor the space, and the details stand out. There’s an Australian newspaper printed specifically for guests at the writing desk. The chairs are beautifully chosen. Even the large chest – which looks like an old expedition esky – opens to reveal a cleverly disguised fridge. From both an interior and exterior perspective, the lodge feels genuinely special.
Architecture & design
Wild Coast Tented Lodge has been designed by Nomadic Resorts, specialists in environmentally sensitive luxury camps. The architecture and interiors have been created to sit seamlessly within the landscape. The lodge is built directly into the edge of Yala National Park and is not enclosed, meaning you are staying within the park itself. The cocoon-shaped tents curve around the natural environment, reinforcing a sense of immersion. It’s luxury that respects its setting, blending into the bush rather than standing apart from it.

Rooms
The tents are unique. You experience a balance between adventure and comfort – luxury design inside a canvas structure. The retro aesthetic continues into the bathroom and fittings, echoing that old-world safari feel. Everything feels considered: the materials, the layout, and how each tent fits into the landscape. You feel cocooned and protected, while
still deeply connected to what’s happening outside. Falling asleep to the sounds of the National Park is part of the experience.

Wildlife & setting
Staying this close to wildlife is exciting. There are moments when you’re stopped from walking along the tracks because animals have moved through the area. Knowing a bull elephant is roaming nearby certainly sharpens your senses. Wildlife spotters are positioned throughout the lodge to ensure safety at all times, but there’s still a thrill in how close you are to nature. Warthogs run through the grounds. Monkeys – cheeky but surprisingly shy – move quietly through the trees. Unlike destinations where monkeys can be aggressive, they’re carefully protected here and not fed by humans, which means they largely keep to themselves and are a pleasure to watch.
One of the most memorable moments is seeing an elephant wander past the restaurant and pool area. It’s almost feels staged, except it isn’t!

Experiences & game drives
The game drives are a standout experience. The leopard – the big-ticket sighting – becomes a running joke before you head out. And then you see them. Multiple leopards, close-up sightings, and even leopards with cubs. For a first safari experience, it’s extraordinary. Being so close to wildlife is genuinely awe-inspiring. You also see elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles, jackals and exceptional birdlife. The hawk-eyed eagle and the painted stork are particular highlights – at times you’re only a metre away.
What is most surprising is how accessible this experience is from Australia. With a flight to Singapore and then onto Colombo, it is a great alternative for those who can’t take more than a week off. Leopards are flourishing in Yala, which increases the likelihood of sightings. The guides are outstanding. Yala is dense and thick jungle, yet the rangers seem to know exactly where wildlife is hiding. At one point, a ranger spots a snake emerging from a tree trunk that looks like nothing more than a twig. Their skill is impressive.

Food & beverage
As the second stop in a Resplendent Ceylon itinerary – following Ceylon Tea Trails – Wild Coast offers a different dining rhythm. Meals are à la carte rather than on-demand, with menus reflecting the coastal setting. Seafood is a highlight. The prawns are exceptional. Freshly made croissants at breakfast are a welcome surprise. Overall, the food is high quality, and the chefs clearly take pride in what they deliver.
A standout experience is the Sri Lankan cooking class. You prepare classic dishes including mustard prawn curry, green beans, yellow dahl and coconut sambal – described as a staple eaten by most Sri Lankans for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Made with fresh coconut, chilli, red onion, lime juice, black pepper and Maldive fish, it’s simple, fiery and delicious.
After cooking, you sit down to a generous lunch, with extra dishes added so you can sample even more from the kitchen.

Spa, sundowners & walking trails
After days of game drives, the spa is a welcome retreat. The facility is peaceful and beautifully designed, with a choice of oils and massage styles tailored to your preference.
Sundowners are another highlight. Cocktails are served down by the rocks at the ocean’s edge, with a makeshift driftwood bar and natural seating created from the landscape itself. The coastline here is rugged and dramatic. You can’t swim in the ocean, but the pool more than makes up for it.
The guided walking trail exceeds expectations. The guide, Saranga, is deeply knowledgeable, pointing out leaves, fruit, animal droppings and fresh tracks – including elephants and sloth bears. Crocodiles, birds and warthogs, whose population is slowly rebuilding after heavy losses from African swine flu. It feels immersive, educational and very safe.

Service
Service is warm and genuine. Because you’re escorted in the early mornings and evenings, staff spend a lot of time walking with you, chatting and checking in on your experience.
The warmth feels authentic. You’re often told, “We’re so happy to have you here” – and it’s clearly meant. There’s a strong sense of pride in sharing this place with visitors.

Verdict
Wild Coast Tented Lodge offers a truly unique experience. Staying within a National Park, surrounded by wildlife, while enjoying thoughtful design and real comfort is something special. As part of a Resplendent Ceylon itinerary – alongside Ceylon Tea Trails and Ahu Bay – it provides contrast, balance and depth. For Australian travellers looking for a safari experience that feels accessible, achievable and genuinely rewarding, this is an exceptional option.
