When it comes to luxury travel, South Africa may not be the first destination that springs to mind. But my recent stay at Jumeirah’s Thanda Royal Residence, as part of the South African Tourism buyers’ famil, proved that Africa offers its own rich and remarkable take on high-end hospitality.
Set in the rolling hills of northern KwaZulu-Natal, The Royal Thanda Club offers a blend of luxury and wilderness within the prestigious Thanda Safari Private Game Reserve.

Spanning 14,000 hectares, this Big Five reserve is a sanctuary where discerning travellers can immerse themselves in raw nature while enjoying the kind of refinement expected from a world-class luxury retreat. More than just a place to stay, The Royal Thanda Club feels like an ode to African royalty – a wilderness experience tinged with gold.
A distinctly African brand of luxury
Jumeirah is globally synonymous with luxury, and Thanda Royal Residence is no exception. Each private villa – owned by influential international families – includes a private veranda, infinity pool, spa treatments, a personal chef and butler, and a team of attentive hospitality staff.
Particularly striking is the villa owned by Thanda Group CEO Pierre Delvaux, which showcases the highest standards of design and comfort, complete with indulgent touches like a Hästens Grand Vividus bed. Despite these global touches, the soul of the villas remains proudly African.
Earth-toned interiors, Zulu-inspired decor, and open-air lounges seamlessly blend with the natural surroundings. As night falls, the fire pit crackles beneath a blanket of stars.

Villa iZulu: The jewel of Thanda
Voted Africa’s Leading Luxury Villa at the World Travel Awards, Villa iZulu is the crown jewel of the estate. This elegant Afro-chic homestead includes five beautifully appointed suites, a heated swimming pool, wine cellar, library, games room, and a panoramic viewing deck overlooking a waterhole.
Perfect for families, groups, or VIPs seeking total privacy, Villa iZulu even includes a private helipad and accommodation for childminders or security staff. Designed for Thanda Safari’s owners, Christin and Dan Olofsson, it’s a true safari sanctuary.

Up close with the wild
The game drives at Thanda Royal Residence were unforgettable. Guided by expert rangers and local Zulu trackers, we explored the reserve in custom 4x4s at dawn and dusk – the golden hours for wildlife viewing.
Highlights included watching a mother cheetah feed her cubs and witnessing an intimate moment between two mating lions. We also spotted elephants, rhinos, giraffes, buffalo and zebras in abundance. The drives were relaxed and deeply informative, offering rare insights into animal behaviour and conservation efforts.

Heart and heritage
“Thanda” means “love” in Zulu, and that ethos pulses through every aspect of the reserve. The 16,500-hectare property isn’t just about luxury – it’s rooted in meaningful community and conservation work.
Thanda Safari partners with local organisations to support education, healthcare, and job creation through initiatives like the Star for Life HIV/AIDS prevention program, the Inkanyiso Crèche project, and a paper-making employment initiative. Staff from surrounding communities are also offered upskilling and further education opportunities.
On the environmental front, Thanda’s dedicated conservation team manages landscape restoration, invasive species removal, water monitoring, and the intricate balance required to support a thriving Big Five reserve.
A soul-stirring farewell
Our final night was marked by a powerful Zulu dance performance from members of a local village – a celebration of heritage, joy, and deep cultural pride. It was the perfect close to a stay that was not just luxurious, but transformative.
Jumeirah’s Thanda Royal Residence is more than a destination – it’s a tribute to Africa’s natural abundance, cultural richness, and heartfelt hospitality.
