The Australian Capital Territory government’s announcement of Queensland’s impending border reopening to Canberrans has ended up being a bit of a social media masterstroke.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr took to Facebook on Friday to reveal that Queensland borders will open to the territory at 1am on Friday 25 September. However, it was the accompanying image that had people hitting the laughing emoji.

The image, which happens to look like a penis riding a surfboard, is actually supposed to be the famous owl statue located in Canberra’s Belconnen district that was erected in 2011.

And the blatantly intentional graphic worked a treat in engaging Barr’s social media followers, with some describing it as “majestic”, “iconic” and “a national treasure”.

However, not all locals appear to be fans of the ‘Belco Owl’, with Abhijit Deonath commenting that while Queensland’s border reopening was “great news”, the owl “is the first one that needs to go”.

Under the eased restrictions imposed by the Queensland government, ACT travellers will only be able to take a quarantine-free holiday by air.

The move by Queensland comes after South Australia lifted border restrictions with the ACT on Thursday, meaning anyone travelling from the territory will no longer be required to quarantine when entering South Australia.
