Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026 has wrapped in Durban with organisers hailing the event as a major catalyst for tourism growth, trade development and cross-continental collaboration, while injecting hundreds of millions into the local economy.

Held in KwaZulu-Natal under the theme “Unlimited Africa: Growing Africa’s Tourism Economy”, the annual showcase reinforced its standing as one of Africa’s premier tourism trade events, bringing together destinations, buyers, media and tourism stakeholders from across the globe.

This year’s event also highlighted the importance of greater collaboration between African nations to unlock the continent’s tourism potential, while aligning strongly with the ambitions of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Early projections point to a significant economic windfall for Durban and the surrounding region, with hotel occupancy forecast to hit 97 per cent during the event period.

Organisers estimate the show and its related activities attracted close to 9,810 delegates, including 274 hosted buyers, 637 non-hosted buyers and 404 registered media. The event is expected to generate approximately R240 million in direct spending and an estimated R835 million in overall tourism expenditure, while supporting more than 1,122 jobs.

South African Tourism Chief Convention Bureau Officer, Corne Koch, said the event once again proved Africa’s ability to host large-scale global tourism trade gatherings while creating tangible economic outcomes.

“Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026 has demonstrated the power of this platform to connect Africa to the world while delivering measurable value for our tourism economy,” Koch said.

“This year’s show reflects both the scale of global interest in Africa’s tourism offering and the confidence in South Africa’s ability to host world-class trade platforms. These figures are not just numbers, they represent trade opportunities, destination visibility, enterprise inclusion and long-term growth for Africa’s tourism economy.”

KwaZulu-Natal leaders also pointed to the event as evidence of the province’s growing importance as a tourism and business events hub.

Interim CEO of KZN Tourism and Film, Sibusiso Gumbi, said the province had firmly established itself as the natural home of the event.

“We have proved beyond doubt that Africa’s Travel Indaba belongs here in KwaZulu-Natal. The focus now is to build on the lessons and momentum of this year’s event while ensuring stronger participation from all African states so that the platform truly reflects the full strength and potential of Africa’s tourism economy,” Gumbi said.

He added that KwaZulu-Natal’s participation in this year’s event reflected a broader strategy to position tourism as a key driver of investment, enterprise development and long-term economic growth.

The City of Durban also celebrated the broader destination impact of the show, particularly the opportunity to showcase the city’s infrastructure, hospitality offering and capability to host major international events.

Deputy Director of Durban Tourism within eThekwini Municipality, Winile Mntungwa, said the calibre of delegates attending this year’s event reinforced confidence in Durban as a world-class meetings and events destination.

“The confidence shown by delegates, buyers, media, and international stakeholders confirms Durban’s readiness to host world-class events through our strong infrastructure, hospitality, logistics, and safety standards,” Mntungwa said.

“What has been particularly exciting is the quality of participants, both regionally and globally, attending this year’s Indaba, which we believe will translate into meaningful business deals and long-term partnerships.”

Beyond the trade floor and business meetings, the 2026 edition also placed a strong focus on skills development and future workforce readiness.

Approximately 300 tourism students from Durban University of Technology were involved in event operations, ushering and delegate services, giving students practical industry experience and vocational development opportunities.

Organisers said the initiative formed part of a broader effort to strengthen sector sustainability and create pathways into tourism careers for young Africans.

This year’s Indaba also reinforced tourism’s growing role as an economic enabler across the continent, not only through visitor spending, but through job creation, market access, innovation and stronger regional partnerships.

As the curtains close on the 2026 edition, organisers say Africa’s Travel Indaba continues to evolve beyond a traditional trade exhibition into a strategic platform shaping the future of African tourism.

From destination marketing and enterprise development to policy dialogue and continental collaboration, the event continues to position Africa’s tourism sector as a major force for economic growth and regional integration.
