Leading aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, has unveiled a brand new cabin concept that it set to change the industry in ‘Airspace Cabin Vision 2035+’.
The concept focuses on creating a lighter weight, more digitised and more sustainable aircraft and was launched through a digital media briefing on 30 May ahead of next weeks Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg.
Airbus’ presentation highlighted a number of key facts regarding their development towards a more sustainable operation since the ‘dawn of the jet-age’. Firstly, figures surrounding aviations impact on manmade CO2 emissions, which it states is as low as 2.5 per cent. For reference, electricity and heat production makes up 42 per cent while manufacturing and construction makes up 21 percent.
Other key metrics presented included a 50 per cent carbon reduction, 80 per cent CO2 reduction, 90 per cent NOX reduction and a 75 per cent noise reduction and Airbus has also set a timeline to reach their goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
The new cabin concept will put the passenger first, and aims to make the improve flying experience in all facets, from the boarding process, to on board meals and of course improve comfort once on board.
Through the new Airspace software, travellers will enjoy a seamless boarding process with end-to-end guidance through a mobile companion. Food will also be able to be selected at the gate for short haul flights, while long haul flights will have a more diverse, a la carte style menu.
Flyers will also be able to check in on key sustainability metrics for their upcoming journey, part of Airbus’ transparency commitment, meaning passengers can gain a better understanding of their individual footprint as well as carbon offset options.
The cabins themselves will feature a range of new design points, including more natural colours and textures as well as the implementation of sustainability strategies such as bionic structures and the use of recycled materials.
