The new vessel builds on the success of the groundbreaking AmaMagna, which shook up the river cruise sector when it launched in 2019 by offering significantly more space than traditional river ships. Once launched, AmaRudi will share the title of Europe’s largest river cruise ship with its sister vessel.
Designed to carry just 196 guests across 98 staterooms and suites, AmaRudi aims to deliver a more spacious and premium onboard experience, complete with multiple dining venues, expanded wellness facilities and a host of new entertainment concepts.
The ship also marks a first for the river cruise line, becoming the first vessel in AmaWaterways’ history to be named after a man. AmaRudi honours co-founder and chairman Rudi Schreiner, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern river cruising.
Born and raised near Austria’s Danube River, Schreiner spent much of his childhood exploring the waterway that will now serve as the ship’s home.
“AmaMagna changed what travellers believed was possible on a river cruise ship,” Schreiner said. “We knew there would be a right time to revisit that concept, and with river cruising continuing to grow, that time is now.
“More travellers are making the transition from ocean cruising to rivers, and many are looking for a sense of space and choice. AmaMagna was one of the most rewarding projects of my career, so having this new ship carry my name makes it especially meaningful. I see it as part of the legacy we have built together over more than two decades of river cruising.”
Danube as inspiration
AmaWaterways said the ship’s design draws inspiration from the cities, architecture and cultures found along the Danube, combining contemporary styling with subtle references to the region’s heritage.
Food and beverage will play a major role in the onboard experience. Guests will be able to choose from several dining venues, including the line’s signature Journey’s Restaurant, The Chef’s Table speciality restaurant, outdoor dining options and the newly introduced Rudi’s Wine Bar.
Named after Schreiner’s passion for wine and European culture, the intimate venue is expected to become one of the ship’s social hubs.
The line is also enhancing its dining offering with complimentary beer, soft drinks and more than 30 wines served during lunch and dinner, alongside new Italian lunch menus at The Chef’s Table. A dedicated Deck Club barbecue on the Sun Deck will provide another casual dining option.
Wellness continues to be a key focus for the company, with AmaRudi featuring massage treatment rooms, hair and nail services, a fitness centre and dedicated relaxation spaces. Guests will also have access to wellness programming and guided fitness activities led by AmaWaterways’ onboard Wellness Hosts.
One standout addition is a full-sized pickleball court on the Sun Deck, reflecting the growing popularity of the sport among travellers.
Updated entertainment venue
The ship will also debut an entirely new entertainment venue featuring a cinema, karaoke facilities, billiards and a jukebox. The space has been designed with soundproofing to ensure minimal impact on other areas of the ship.
Sustainability features include advanced Stage V engines, solar panels, shore power connectivity, spud poles and lightweight construction materials designed to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
“AmaRudi reflects our confidence in the future of river cruising and our continued commitment to innovation,” AmaWaterways CEO Catherine Powell said.
“From the moment AmaMagna launched, travellers and travel advisors have been asking if we would ever build another ship like her. With AmaRudi, we’re taking that concept even further. There is tremendous opportunity to continue pushing the boundaries of what a river cruise ship can be while preserving the exceptional service and intimate experience that have defined our company for more than two decades.”
AmaRudi is scheduled to enter service on the Danube in early 2027, operating a selection of AmaWaterways’ most popular itineraries. Further details on accommodations, onboard experiences and bookings are expected to be released in the coming months.
