andBeyond leads groundbreaking white rhino translocation to Tanzania

andBeyond is again pushing the boundaries of conservation innovation as it leads the translocation of white rhinos from South Africa to Tanzania.

This initiative, in collaboration with Tanzania’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT) and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA), marks a major step toward securing the future of the species.

andBeyond’s commitment to white rhino conservation spans over three decades. In 1991, andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve undertook the largest-ever translocation of white rhino, reintroducing 26 individuals to the reserve. Since then, the Munywana Conservancy has played a pivotal role in numerous groundbreaking rhino relocations. These include the pioneering translocation to Botswana, the historic movement of 30 rhinos to Rwanda’s Akagera National Park, and, most recently, the successful relocation of 16 rhinos to Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“For over thirty years, andBeyond has been dedicated to protecting endangered species like white rhino,” andBeyond conservation and community impact director, Tony Adams, said. “Initiatives such as these are a proven conservation strategy in ensuring the survival of endangered species.”

The rhino will ungerdo a period of habituation in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, identified as an ideal habitat due to its security measures and ecological suitability, before being released into their new habitat.

The translocation is part of a phased initiative, ultimately aiming to establish a genetically diverse breeding population in Tanzania, with 36 white rhinos to be introduced over time.
