A new study from travel booking platform, GoEuro has revealed that trains take the cake for the best way to travel across Europe, not only in environmental footprint, but also in travel time.

Mmmm cake.

Anyway, back to the study.

The research found that the most time saving you can do on a train is nearly three and a half hours, this speedy train journey is the London to Paris trip using the Channel Tunnel.

It’s not just the magic of the world’s longest under-sea train tunnel that can save you time, other train journeys that are faster than their air counterparts include Brussels to Paris, Madrid to Valencia, Marseille to Lyon, Bologne to Rome, and London to Manchester.

High-speed trains are the way to go when travelling around Europe, with the continent’s fastest train in Italy that can travel up to 360km/h. Similarly, the longest domestic high-speed train in the region is over 800km long, originating in Madrid.

Another travel booking site, Rome2rio, whose study was recently published in Lonely Planet, has concluded that trains not only save time from journeys but can also save the traveller money, and not only in Europe.

Trains across India can save the traveller up to £113 (around $200 AUD) compared to a plane ticket from Mumbai to New Delhi. Not only can trains cut travel costs, but they can also negate the need for accommodation. A night train ride from Buenos Aires to Cordoba in Argentina saves the traveller from paying for a hotel room for the night and allows them to soak up the brilliant view from the train window.

And in even more shocking news, the same study by GoEuro found that busses triumph over planes in travel time in the case of Amsterdam to Brussels, shaving off a solid three-quarters of an hour off the journey.
