Abercrombie & Kent launches "affordable" trips

Luxury operator Abercrombie and Kent has launched a range of "affordable" private tours in a bid to reach a new Australian market.

While it has added to its high-end line with an exclusive private jet itinerary, the operator also announced the expansion of its Connections range of small group itineraries to include the new private tours.

“A & K is seen as an aspirational product and we always want that to be the case, but this new product is very affordable,” Abercrombie & Kent Australia and New Zealand managing director Sujata Raman said.

The private tours have fewer meals and the accommodation is a rung down from the original Abercrombie and Kent offering.

“The idea is to broaden the market. These are not targeted at the traditional market. It is not as structured and there’s 30% less touring,” Raman said.

The private tours are only available in Australia and are intended to tap into Australian travellers desire for flexibility.

Raman told Travel Today that despite a 35% to 60% cheaper price point for the private tours, A & K’s luxury reputation would not be tarnished because the ground services and guides are the same.

The Connections range of group tours is in its second year and Australia represents more than a quarter of business sold internationally.

Meanwhile, Abercrombie & Kent also announced a private jet journey from Perth to Darwin in August that will visit the Pilbara, Kununurra and Arnhem Land.

Raman anticipates that 70% of the 30 private jet passengers will be Australian. “The tour goes off the beaten track and it’s certainly not for the first time visitor to Australia,” Raman said.

The operator has also launched a brochure service through the website that allows agents to mix itineraries from stand-alone brochures and email the personalised package to clients.
