Aussie women opting for solo travel

Australian women are increasingly embracing independent travel, a recent study shows.

The findings of TripAdvisor’s inaugural Women and the World Travel Survey reveal why women are growing more inclined to set off on solo adventures.

The study of over 3,200 Australian women found that one in three women travel alone for leisure, with 40% planning at least two to four solo trips this year. Nearly two-thirds said travelling alone had changed them, with 31% of these women experiencing a boost in confidence. The majority of women surveyed said they felt more independent and free when holidaying solo.

“Australians are amongst the most well-travelled in the world, and it’s clear that Aussie women are embracing the positive effects that travelling by yourself can bring,” TripAdvisor APAC president, Cindy Tan, said.

An enormous 82% of Aussie women surveyed said they simply travel alone to “get away from it all.” Others cited the ability to choose their own schedules without the hindrance of friends or family as an advantage.

Of the women planning independent trips within Australia, New South Wales took the top spot (40%), followed closely by Victoria (38%) and Queensland (35%).

Heading a little further from home, the lure of European adventures is first choice for Aussie women (46%), seconded by Asia (39%) and North America (28%).
