Cruise line axes Aussie season

Cruise line axes Aussie season
By admin

Classic International Cruises has cancelled its entire Australian season after administrators and the cruise line’s management were unable to find a replacement vessel for the Athena.

More than 5300 passengers had booked cruises with the company.

The Travel Compensation Fund told Travel Today yesterday that it had already received claims totalling $40,000. A deluge of other claims is now expected.

Early estimates put the likely total cost of claims close to $2 million, possibly more.

Administrator Brad Tonks, from Lawler Partners, told Travel Today that several cruise ship providers had come forward but the vessels offered were "not suitable".

They were either too large or too expensive, he said.

Efforts to secure funding from the WA Government to help the sticken cruise line also proved futile.

The Australian season was due to start on December 18 with the repositioning cruise due to depart from Marseille, France on Monday bound for Perth.

A creditor's meeting will take place on Monday afternoon in Sydney.

More to follow.
