Fiji Airways acting CEO warns of dollar risk
By admin

Fiji Airway’ acting chief executive has warned that the weakening Australian dollar could work against the island destination as domestic holidays become increasingly attractive.

Aubrey Swift, who will step down from his temporary role at the end of month, said there is a view in Fiji that the currency fluctuations could benefit Fijian tourism.

He told the CAPA aviation conference in Sydney there is optimism that holidaymakers will “stop going to the US and come to Fiji instead”.

“My own view is that [the weakening dollar against the US dollar] brings domestic Australian holidays into focus,” Swift said.

But Peter Ingram, Hawaiian Airlines executive vice president and chief commercial officer, said Australians do not regard their currency as undervalued and are “still getting a pretty good deal”.

He said the carrier has not seen any bookings downturn since the dollar began to weaken.
