The Queensland Government’s call for expressions of interest for the development of a multi-purpose cruise facility on the Gold Coast has been branded a “step in the right direction” by Carnival boss Ann Sherry.

Sherry identified cruising as a natural fit for the region which would see local tourism benefit from an influx of cruise passengers.

"Cruising's growth in Queensland has played a significant part in our industry becoming the standout success of Australian tourism in recent years," she said.

The cruise line "looks forward" to working the with relevant authorities to develop a cruise ship terminal on the Gold Coast, she added.

“We have always said that if the facilities are there the cruise ships will come and we clearly welcome this intiative to make the Gold Coast part of cruising’s overall economic success."
