Gurney will energise JTG: Joyce
By admin

Qantas said it expects its former commercial chief Rob Gurney to galvanise Jetset Travelworld and improve the fortunes of the struggling business.

Chief executive Alan Joyce acknowledged that he was delighted to see Gurney installed as JTG’s new chief executive, a role he will assume from Peter Lacaze on Monday, the same day it releases its 2012 financial results. Qantas holds a 29% stake in the retailer.

“The JTG performance is not where we would expect given the returns we want out of it and we think more needs to be done,” Joyce said in response to a Travel Today question.

“I am glad to see that Rob Gurney has taken the role of chief executive and we expect Rob to energise where the business needs to go and make the appropriate turnaround.” Joyce stressed he was “in no rush to sell anything”.

“We want to ensure we get the appropriate shareholder value and make sure we get the appropriate level of returns,” he said.

Asked if Qantas influenced the appointment of Gurney, Joyce said: “We were obviously very supportive of the decision.”

Chief financial officer Gareth Evans added that the appointment was “a JTG board decision”.
