Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo has crashed during a test flight, killing the co-pilot and seriously injuring the pilot.

Virgin Galactic released a statement saying its partner Scaled Composites conducted a powered test flight of SpaceShipTwo and during the test, the vehicle suffered a serious anomaly resulting in the loss of the vehicle.

The WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft landed safely.

“Our first concern is with crew and their families. We will work closely with relevant authorities to determine the cause of this accident and provide updates as soon as we are able to do so,” the statement read.

According to the Kern County Sheriff's spokesperson, Ray Pruitt, the pilot ejected and suffered "moderate to major injuries.”

Virgin Group founder Richard Branson tweeted that he was flying to be the team and was thankful for the messages of support he had received.
