Pitcairn Island push into Australian market

Pitcairn Island push into Australian market
By admin

Pitcairn Island is putting itself on the tourist map as an emerging destination through marketing and awareness programs launching across Australia in the coming months.

Representing Pitcairn Tourism, Richard Hankin of Tropics Marketing also announced the 2015/2016 dates for passenger ship services to the remote destination.

Access to Pitcairn from Australia is a flight route to Auckland (New Zealand), Papeete (Tahiti) stopping at Mangareva before boarding a 486-tonne cargo passenger vessel, MV Claymore II for a 40 hour boat crossing to Pitcairn Island.

The quarterly service operates only 8 round trips per year between Managareva and the French Polynesian Island, making it an exclusively sought after destination. Hankin told Travel Today as demand for the destination increases, there is potential to provide additional rotations through the year.

In Sydney to launch the new sailing dates and offer insight into the destination was guest speaker and 7th generation Pitcairn Islander Jacqui Christian.

Christian highlighted the historical background of Pitcairn, famous for the Mutiny on the Bounty. The remote location of Pitcairn also makes the island a “truly an adventure destination,” Christian added.

Attracting a the niche high end market, visitors to Pitcairn can do a four, 11 or 18 day stay in which prices range from USD70-120 per person/per day for homestay accommodation.

Interest in the island is also attracting the cruise market. Pitcairn enjoyed its biggest year for cruise ship visitation, with 14 ships docking off the island this year alone. Looking to increase the appeal for cruise ships, Pitcairn is currently building a ship landing facility which is expected to be completed in the next 12 months.

While the destination is popular with the US and Europe markets, Pitcairn Tourism is targeting the Australian market by creating awareness through Trade Webinars, training and distribution of sales collateral.
