Three times no charm for Qantas

Three times no charm for Qantas

Qantas isn’t being dealt any favours this week, with its third unscheduled landing in 24 hours.

According to the ABC, the latest flight to endure a forced landing was flight QF7, en route to Dallas from Sydney, which returned four hours after take-off due to a technical issue affecting seat power, in-flight entertainment systems and some toilets.

In a statement, the airline said, “While the aircraft could have continued flying safely to Dallas, the decision was made to return to Sydney in the interest of passenger comfort on what is a long flight.”

The A380 marks a trifecta of flights to make unscheduled landings due to non-safety related issues in less than 24 hours, the ABC reports, with Qantas saying customers who did not live in Sydney had been booked into hotels, and travellers rebooked onto another flight scheduled to fly out this morning.

“Sorry @Qantas, this flight was painful. But your flight crew were amazing. Hope tomorrow will be better,” tweeted Michael Kirsten.

"My favourite part of that flight was when @Qantas couldn't flush the toilets and cabin electrics wouldn't work," another passenger tweeted.

On Monday afternoon, a Qantas flight from Perth to Karratha was turned back after a strong odour was detected, and the 737 pilot called for emergency landing protocols over concerns of smoke inhalation, the ABC reported.

Earlier in the day, another Qantas A380 travelling from Dubai to Sydney made an emergency landing in Perth after developing an air conditioning fault, with Qantas stating, “As a precaution, the aircraft descended to 10,000 feet and the captain requested a priority landing.”

No one was injured in any of these incidents, however the smoke detection in the 737 saw 80 passengers assessed by St John Ambulance staff, according to the ABC.

It comes off the back of CEO Alan Joyce’s forecast of a first-half, pretax underlying profit of between $300 million and $350 million, which compares with a $252 million loss in the same period last year.
