Qantas still top despite shrinking share

Qantas retained the largest chunk of Australia's international aviation market in 2011/12, but new figures confirmed its share has shrunk considerably over the last decade.

A Department of Infrastructure and Transport report released today revealed international air passenger traffic to and from Australia climbed 4.8% in the year to June 2012. Over that time, 28.9 million people flew with scheduled international services into and out of Australia, up from 27.5 million the year before.

Qantas carried 18.1% of that traffic, followed by Singapore Airlines with 9.1%, Emirates and Air New Zealand both with 8.2% and Jetstar with 8.1%.

However, the carrier's share of the international aviation market was shown to have plummeted 16.3 percentage points over the ten year period since 2001/02. With newer additions to the group such as Jetstar and Jetstar Asia factored in, that decrease eased to 7.9 percentage points.

Singapore Airlines also saw its share decline over the ten year period, dipping 2.8 percentage points, while Air New Zealand saw its share slip by 1.6 percentage points.

However, Emirates’ share increased by 6.7 percentage points. The Dubai-based carrier is awaiting regulatory approval of its global strategic alliance with Qantas, scheduled to start in April 2013.

Australian designated airlines’ share of international passenger traffic stood at 32.9% for the year, down from 35.2% in 2001/02. But the figure was improved from the lows of 32.6% seen in 2006/07.

Meanwhile, low cost carriers accounted for 15.6% of traffic, down from 19% last year, which the report attributed mainly to the exit of Virgin Australia from the sector.

“The decrease in the LCC share is mainly because Virgin Australia replaced the low cost brands Pacific Blue and Polynesian Blue with the full service brands Virgin Australia and Virgin Samoa in December 2011,” the report said.

Meanwhile, New Zealand, Singapore, the US, Hong Kong and Indonesia came top in terms of passenger movements over the year. Singapore accounted for 17.4% of movements, followed by Auckland with 13.4%.

But Canada topped the bill for load factor, with services to the destination averaging loads of 85.1%, followed by the US with 83.1% and the UAE with 81.2%.
