Rail Europe set for new fares
By admin

Rail Europe is just days away from linking the full range of Trenitalia products and fares to its system with German rail network Deustche Bahn following in the new year.

Inventory from the Italian state railway could go live as early as mid-November in a deal that will give agents and wholesalers in Australia access to the lowest possible fares in Italy that are presently only available in Europe.

News of the soon-to-launch expanded product range came as Rail Europe said it was looking for growth of between 10% and 12% in Australia in 2013.

Paris-based commercial Florence Pasquier told Travel Today that while Rail Europe, and by extension its GSA’s in Australia, have had access to a broad range of Trenitalia’s fares, the lowest category of prices has not been available.

“It’s only marginal but it’s important for us to have the full range of fares,” she said.

Testing is underway with the product likely to be available from mid-November.

Deutsche Bahn will follow “in early 2013”, she said.

Pasquier said revenue generated for Rail Europe from Australasia in 2012 was set to hit €40 million – €35 million in Australia with the balance coming from New Zealand.

While that will represent healthy growth of between 17% and 20% from last year, Pasquier said it was less than she had hoped.

“But then we have had growth of 30% to 40% for three years in a row,” she added, acknowledging it was a tough ask to continue growing at such a rate.
