Singapore Airlines reported a 6% lift in passenger numbers in December with strong holiday traffic to the US and Europe behind the growth.

But the carrier again warned that tough trading conditions will lead to promotional offers and put yields under pressure.

Passenger numbers hit 1.6 million in December with revenue passenger kilometres climbing 6.1% over the same month last year. Capacity increased 2.8% leading to a rise in load factor of 2.6 percentage points to 82.2%.

Loads on South West Pacific routes climbed 1.7 points to 86.4%, the highest in Singapore's network.

SilkAir passenger numbers increased 11% against capacity growth of almost 20%. It resulted in a fall in loads of six percentage points to 77.1%.
