Brazilian carrier TAM will leave Star Alliance in early 2014 as LATAM Airlines Group confirmed its membership of Oneworld.

TAM chief executive Marco Antonio Bologna underlined the improved connectivity that would result from the move which was flagged by Travel Today last June.

"We are focused on ensuring a smooth transition for the company, our partners and, most important, our clients," he said.

Meanwhile, LATAM Airlines Group chief executive Enrique Cueto said he was "very happy" with the decision.

"We evaluated all the possibilities and chose the alliance that offers the best benefits to our passengers, besides the best connectivity and products, as well as the greater synergies for LATAM Airlines Group," he said.

LAN Colombia will also join Oneworld, bringing the entire group under the alliance's umbrella.
