Tourism New Zealand has reported the potential of an Australian market segment who are keen to visit but are postponing their visit in favour of more distant destinations.

A priority for the organisation is to convince those travellers to visit now.

“Of the more than 4 million Australians who have NZ on their wish list as one of their first or second destinations to come to, half haven’t actually been before,” Tourism New Zealand general manager Tony Saunders said.

That market represents 2.1 million Australians.

“The potential there is that we know that once they come once they will come at least another three or four times in a lifetime,”  Saunders said.

Near to a half of all Australian travellers to New Zealand are aged 50 plus.

“I wouldn’t say we’ve conquered the baby boomer market, but they are a large proportion of our business,” Saunders said.

Tourism NZ wants to lure this market by focusing on the points of difference between experiences on offer in Australia, such as geothermal attractions.

“They are looking further afield and holding us back so it’s all about how we convince them to come now by highlighting that we are more unique than they realise,” Saunders said.
