Tourism outlook brightens: report

The outlook for inbound tourism has strengthened on the back of better than expected performances from both emerging and traditional markets, according to a report.

Deloitte Access Economics' Tourism and Hotel Market Outlook report showed arrivals grew sharply in the second half of 2012 from the South East Asian markets of China, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

But rises were also seen from the "recently subdued" traditional markets of Japan and the US as signs of a recovery gathered momentum.

"With this outperformance has come a strengthening in our forecast for international visitor nights," Deloitte said.

Annual growth is now expected to hit 4.7% per annum over the next three years.

However, the report revealed a "subdued" growth outlook for Europe as unemployment rates across the Eurozone remain high.

"Nevertheless, the risk of Europe dragging the world's economy into recession is diminished compared with 12 months ago," it said.

Meanwhile, the outlook for domestic travel was described as "encouraging", despite a 3.8% decline in domestic visitor nights in the September quarter.

The year to September saw growth of 4.5%, bucking a decade of decline, with domestic day trips also up 10.6% for the 12 month period. Deloitte forecast domestic visitor nights to grow at an average rate of 1.3% per annum over the next three years.

Outbound travel by Australians continues to "significantly outpace" domestic travel, although the report stressed the trend has dramatically slowed from recent highs.
