The Tourism & Transport Forum have taken it upon themselves to showcase the importance of the tourism sector to the state's economy with the launch of the New South Wales Tourism Business Count & Employment Atlas.

The Atlas found tourism provides at least 800 direct jobs in every seat, largely to showcase the impact of tourism to every state electorate, as well as including a count of tourism businesses by industry, with individual electorate profiles to be sent to all MPs and candidates before the March state election.

“Tourism is an enormous driver of economic growth, and politicians throughout the state need to make sure they stand up for a sector that is delivering jobs for families in their electorates,” TTF chief executive officer, Margy Osmond, said.

“Direct tourism jobs provide at least 4% of employment in all 93 lower house electorates, a contribution few, if any, other industries can match.

“On average, tourism provides 5.1% of direct jobs in seats across New South Wales, meaning more than 1700 people in every electorate rely on tourism for their income.

“Direct tourism jobs account for more than 7% of employment in five electorates – three regional in Bega (7.3%), Tweed (7.3%) and Ballina (7.1 per cent), and two metropolitan in Rockdale (7.2%) and Sydney (7.1%) – showing that tourism is important to all parts of the state.

Osmond said tourists spend more than $75 million a day across NSW with the expenditure supporting 91,000 tourism businesses and more than 158,000 direct tourism jobs, while tourism also supports a further 109,000 indirect jobs in the state.

“With the right policy framework and investment in tourism marketing and infrastructure, tourism can make an even greater contribution to the New South Wales economy,” she said.

“While the TTF New South Wales Tourism Business Count & Employment Atlas illustrates the importance of tourism to NSW now, tourism has been identified as a ‘super-growth’ industry that can be an economic development strategy for the state, providing future job and business opportunities.

“We are calling on all parties to ensure that growing the tourism industry is a priority heading into the 2015 state election.”
