Capacity cuts in December helped push up long haul yields at Cathay Pacific but the premium performance was weaker than expected.

Cathay and its Dragonair subsidiary carried 2.5 million passengers, up 2.5% on December 2011, while capacity fell 4.5%. It resulted in load factors rising 1.1 percentage points to 80.7%.

The carrier's general manager revenue management, James Tong, said it was the fourth month in a row of year-on-year capacity decline.

"Passenger demand held up in the economy cabin in December, with high numbers travelling to key regional destinations over the holiday period," he said. "The reduction in capacity helped to push up yield on long haul routes, however, the overall performance in the premium cabins was weaker than expected."

For the 2012 as a whole, passenger carryings rose 5% against capacity increases of 2.6%. Load factor for the 12 months was down 0.3 points to 80.1%.
