Aus government doubles down on India travel warnings

Aus government doubles down on India travel warnings

‘Smarttraveller’ has today updated its warnings for those headed to India following violent demonstrations and the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Biparjoy, which made land on 14 June.

“Curfews and restrictions continue in parts of Manipur following violent demonstrations, resulting in casualties,” the website said today.

“Security agencies have increased their presence in the region. Mobile internet services remain suspended, and transport services have been disrupted. Further restrictions may be imposed at short notice.”

“If you’re in Manipur, avoid demonstrations and large public gatherings, follow the advice of local authorities, take official warnings seriously and monitor local media for updates.”

Last week the Indian Metrological Department issued a warning last week as the ‘very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy’ crossed the Arabian Sea, resulting in the evacuation of thousands of Gujarat residents.

Meanwhile, in the North-Eastern state of Manipur, Indian Authorities are struggling to keep an ethnic-based conflict under control.

Over 100 people have been killed and over 50,000 displaced by the violence that, according to activists, could destabilise an already volatile border region.

Lat month, tensions between the ethnic Meitei people who live around the capital, Imphal, making up more than 50 per cent of the Manipur population and the Kukis and Nagas (hill dwelling tribal communities) overflowed due to issues around demographic displacement and the protection of minority privileges.
