Aussie faces a decade behind bars in Bali

A long prison wall in Bali Indonesia

An Australian who was found with marijuana and narcotic at Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport could face more than a decade in prison for the offense.

According to a police spokesman, the charge to Mount Isa local James Baker, who briefly escaped custody through an air vent, carries a maximum sentence of 12 years with a minimum of five.

The 32-year old was originally detained in Bali on 8 October with 28 grams of marijuana and 37 diazepam pills.

Having originally escaped through a toilet air vent, Baker was found by police 10 hours later on tourist hotspot Canggu beach.

According to News.com, Baker’s lawyer has told the media her client is mentally unwell and cannot be held accountable for his actions.

As per News.com, Baker had told police he did not believe he was guilty because marijuana is legal in Australia.

He added that this was the first time he had brought his own supply to Bali, being that he usually buys it on the island.
